Cottonseed Hulls Cottonseed Hulls have long been used as a high fiber supplement to custom feed mixes for many classes of livestock including goats, sheep and cattle. Cottonseed hulls are seed coats that are removed from the cottonseed before the oil extraction process. Not to be confused with Cottonseed Meal, which is a by-product of the oil extraction process. Cottonseed hulls are used mostly in the southern area of the U.S. They are low in protein, calcium, phosphorus and energy and high in fiber. Cottonseed hulls are palatable and are used as a roughage for cattle, especially in areas where good quality forages are scarce. I have seen a number of cattle operations utilize cottonseed hulls in their feeding programs, often adding cottonseed hulls at up to 25% of the entire mix consisting of hay, incilage, and other standard cattle feeds. The same ratio holds true for goats and some other classes of livestock as well. While most livestock will tend to ignore cottonseed hulls placed out free choice, it is best utilized by adding into an existing ration. Some livestock will eat it free choice from time to time: horses, llamas, alapacas. Gardening enthusiasts also understand the benefit of cottonseed hulls or cottonseed meal in their mulching and fertilizer programs.
